Here is an overview of the root canal treatment process:
Diagnosis:
The dentist examines the tooth and may use X-rays to assess the extent of the damage or infection. Symptoms that may indicate the need for a root canal include severe toothache, sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling, and tenderness.
Local Anesthesia:
Before the procedure begins, the dentist administers a local anesthetic to numb the affected tooth and the surrounding area. This ensures that the patient is comfortable and does not feel pain during the treatment.
Isolation and Access:
The dentist places a rubber dam around the tooth to keep it dry and free of saliva during the procedure. An access opening is then created in the tooth to reach the pulp chamber.
Cleaning and Shaping:
The infected or damaged pulp is carefully removed from the pulp chamber and root canals using specialized instruments. The canals are cleaned and shaped to remove any remaining debris, bacteria, and infected tissue.
Irrigation:
The root canals are irrigated with antibacterial solutions to disinfect and cleanse the canals thoroughly.
Filling:
Once the canals are cleaned and shaped, they are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha to seal the space and prevent further infection. The access opening in the tooth is then sealed with a temporary or permanent filling.
Restoration:
In many cases, a tooth that has undergone a root canal will require additional reinforcement, such as a dental crown. The dentist may recommend a crown to restore the tooth’s strength, functionality, and appearance. The crown is usually placed in a separate appointment after the root canal treatment.
